Sustainable Vineyard Farming since the 1880s

Our Family's Dedication

We’re proud to be one of the last bastions of family winegrowing in Sonoma County. Spanning across five generations and more than 135 years, we’ve farmed the Martinelli estate vineyards with a relentless pursuit of quality and total dedication to our craft. These ideals are shared across our team—from the vineyard to the cellar to the tasting room—and are instilled in everything we do.

Our Story

The Martinelli Family has been growing grapes and making wine in the Russian River Valley since the late 1880s. As 5th generation stewards of some of the finest vineyards in the region, we’re proud to continue this legacy of hands-on farming, bringing decades of experience to everything we do.

Get to Know Us

Vineyards

It all started when you have a sense of humor to call a vineyard Jackass Hill. Jackass Hill Vineyard was planted by Giuseppe Martinelli in the late 1880s at 19 years of age. This 65 degree, non-terraced slope is very, very difficult to farm. Nowadays, you would not be permitted to plant on such extreme slopes but, as we’ve always said, “you’d have to be a jackass to farm a hill that steep.” This was the first vineyard our family planted in the Russian River Valley when Giuseppe immigrated over as a 19 year old.

Our family has been growing grapes and making wines ever since. Our Jackass Hill Vineyard is still being farmed by Lee Sr. Martinelli, making it one of the oldest Zinfandel vineyards that still produces wine today. For generations our ancestors have been farmers of the land and we have been fortunate enough to continue that heritage. Some of our vineyard lands started as grazing pastures for sheep in the 1860’s, others as hop fields, apple and prune orchards and potato fields. Agriculture is how we have survived for over 140 years and also how we give back to the world. This is why it was very important for us to be Certified 100% Sustainable for all our farming and winery practices.

Our family is dedicated to our craft and the evolution of our story as our 6th generation drives those traditions forward with the same spirited enthusiasm and values.

Wines

The primary goal of Martinelli Winery has always been hand-crafting quality wines that are born in our estate vineyards. The grapes come from estate grown fruit, allowing us to use only our favorite blocks for each vineyard designated wine. We have a commitment to quality and have never offered for sale a wine that we felt did not live up to the reputation and expectations of its label. We also try to maintain a sense of consistency with each vintage, while still allowing the true nature of the vineyard to shine through. These wines are limited production and each vineyard is hand farmed very carefully, producing only the finest quality fruit.

We try as much as possible to use a hands-off approach during the winemaking process, allowing the wine to go through a set of natural processes with minimal intervention. Ironically, this approach requires much more expertise and attention from the winemaking team.

Visiting Martinelli Winery

Join Us

Martinelli Winery has always hand-crafted quality wines since the 1880s that are grown in our estate vineyards. Each vineyard is meticulously farmed and we use only our best blocks for each vineyard designated wine. You typically will not find our wines on a shelf in a wine store, hence the best way to access these selections is direct from the winery. We have several ways you can do this.
