Zio Tony Ranch Syrah 2008

Growing Year Info

Often referred to as the fire & ice year, wildfires swept across California from Santa Barbara to the Oregon border, with the Sonoma Coast and Anderson Valley being hit the hardest by the smoke drifting down from Mendocino Counties. Martinelli Winery did not produce any red wines from their coastal vineyards this year because of the smoke taint. Smoke taint refers to the smoke drift that lands, like dust, on the berries. Since red wines are soaked on their skins to impart color and flavor, the smoke drift on the skins was also passed on to the wines. The result was like a liquid barbeque in the glass and we chose not to release our Blue Slide Ridge Pinot Noir or our Three Sisters Vineyard Pinot Noir due to this. The white wines from the coastal region faired better since the juice spends very little time on the skins, which is where the smoke taint resides.

Tasting Notes

The 2008 Zio Tony Ranch Syrah has aromas of blackberries, currants and bacon. Flavors include dried blueberries, sassafras, and juicy blackcurrants and licorice.
