Review

As for the 2003 Syrah Hop Barn Hill, this is one of the most exotic, over-the-top Syrahs produced in California. Inky black/purple, resembling squid ink, with an exotic nose of blue and black fruits interwoven with white flowers, pepper, some creosote and new saddle leather, this is an amazingly rich, full-bodied wine that is almost like syrup of Syrah. It is not for everybody, but it sure pushes the envelope and demonstrates that Martinelli refuses to play within the normally accepted parameters of winedom.
